What is a Bluetooth Company ID?

The Bluetooth SIG assigns unique 16-bit Company IDs to member companies. These appear in Bluetooth advertisements (e.g. in the manufacturer-specific data field) and are used to identify the originating vendor. For example, 0x004C is Apple Inc.
