Counting to 10
Say each number as you touch each object — one number per object.

Counting to 20
Teen numbers start with 1 (one ten) plus the extra ones.
0 = none
Zero
Zero means there are no objects in the group at all.
5 + 1 = 6 8 + 1 = 9
One more
One more than any number is the very next number when counting.
8 − 1 = 7 5 − 1 = 4
One less
One less than any number is the one just before it.
2 + 3 = 5 1 + 4 = 5
Addition (to 5)
Putting two groups together to find the total.
5 − 2 = 3 4 − 1 = 3
Subtraction (to 5)
Taking away objects from a group to find what is left.
1+4 2+3 5+0 0+5 3+2 4+1
Make 5
All the pairs of numbers that add up to exactly 5.
1+9 2+8 3+7 4+6 5+5 10+0
Make 10
All the pairs of numbers that add up to exactly 10.

Circle
Every point on a circle is the same distance from the centre.

Square
All four sides are the same length. All corners are right angles.

Triangle
The shape with the fewest sides. Comes in many sizes.
4 sides, 4 corners 2 long, 2 short sides
Rectangle
Opposite sides are equal. A square is a special rectangle.
