When to use JPEG vs PNG vs WebP
- JPEG — best for photographs. Smaller file sizes due to lossy compression. Does not support transparency.
- PNG — best for screenshots, logos and images with text. Lossless, supports transparency. Larger files for photos.
- WebP — modern format designed by Google. Smaller than JPEG and PNG, supports transparency and animation. Supported by all modern browsers.
Why convert to WebP?
WebP images are on average 25–35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality, and 25% smaller than PNG. This makes a significant difference to page load speed and Core Web Vitals scores.
Does format conversion reduce quality?
Converting JPEG or PNG to WebP at 90%+ quality is virtually lossless to the human eye. Converting to PNG is always lossless. Converting from PNG to JPEG discards transparency (transparent areas become white).
HEIC / HEIF conversion
HEIC (used by iPhones) cannot be decoded by standard browser APIs. Converting HEIC files requires a server-side process. This tool currently supports JPEG, PNG and WebP input.
