What is Morse code?

Morse code is a communication system that encodes text characters as sequences of dots (short signals) and dashes (long signals). Developed by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s, it was widely used in telegraphy, maritime communication, and aviation. It remains in use today for amateur radio and as an accessibility aid.

How to read Morse code

A dot (ยท) is one unit long. A dash (โ€”) is three units long. Symbols within a letter are separated by one unit of silence. Letters are separated by three units. Words are separated by seven units (shown here as a slash).

Morse code as an accessibility tool

Morse code can be input using a single switch, making it a powerful accessibility tool for people with limited mobility. Some devices allow users to type entire messages using just two inputs: one for dots and one for dashes.
