What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. It applies to adult men and women and is calculated as weight (kg) divided by height squared (m²).
BMI formula
- Metric: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²
- Imperial: BMI = (weight (lb) / height (in)²) × 703
BMI categories (WHO standard)
- Below 18.5 — Underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9 — Normal weight
- 25.0 to 29.9 — Overweight
- 30.0 and above — Obese
Limitations of BMI
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution. Athletes often have a high BMI despite low body fat. Always consult a healthcare professional for a complete health assessment.
